A chance for progress or advancement.(2) What is an opportunity? If we look at the definition above it is something that is not planned like a college education. An "opportunity" would be the ways in which to make the money for a college education. An "opportunity" is not a long term job. Several clichés have emerged that show a lack of longevity: "Opportunity knocks but once", "Grab this opportunity while you can", "Don't pass up this opportunity", "Get in on the ground floor while the opportunity is here", "Opportunities come and go". All suggesting that the opportunity's availability may be short lived in the onset. Like the opportunity to buy stock in Apple computers at a low rate, that was an opportunity and was short lived. You can still buy stock but not at the low rate you could thirty years ago. Now that we have determined an opportunity is short lived and it does not have a long term plan to reach it, what about other factors like how often do opportunities spring up? What are the risks in an opportunity? How can you tell if the opportunity is a good one? How can you tell a scam before you've spent a dime? What is the difference between an opportunity and a viable small business? We will make an effort to publish information on answers to these very important questions. Business opportunities are risky as is all business ventures. When an opportunity appears there is no proof of its success. When Steve Wozniak built the first Apple computer in Steve Jobs's garage neither knew for sure it would be a success. What they did know is that their idea was a good one and they believed it would go far. And it did. The invention of machines, methods, manufactured products, compositions and new ideas for an old product are ALWAYS happening. The United States Patent and Trademark Office of the Department of Commerce of the United States has a backlog of patents pending of 24.7 months, and that is just inventions. Today we are bombarded with Work At Home* and Mail Order opportunities. But there are no guarantees to the success of any opportunity nor its viability, only a projected success can be determined based on the current market flow and that projection does not account for failures caused by natural disasters or stock market crashes. Some opportunities which are opening as a result of a new "happening", like the Internet, are based on theories only, which is even more risky because there is nothing to measure it by, only speculation.
