This is a very large animation, there are 96 images of between 4 and 6 KB each to be loaded. Please be patient if you are a low bandwidth user (14.4 and 28.8 Kbps connections), it is well worth the wait!

IE 5.x (Internet Explorer) may not be able to load the images.

If after the browser says it is done (located at the bottom of the browser in the Status Bar) and you still do not see the earth rotating then you will need to download Netscape. You can download one of two versions.

Netscape 6.2 (Installs over Internet)

Right click link then "Save Target As" to save Installer file.
or Netscape 4.x (Complete or Base Install)

Explanation
The straight line between day and night is called the Terminator. Ummm... no, not Arnold Schwarzenegger's version, but a planetary version. To terminate means to end. Here a day ends and a night begins. Have you noticed how the days get longer every day when we go into summer? If you pay close attention you can notice this difference on a daily basis. If you live high up in the North, in Canada for example or in Sweden, you will find that around March and April the days get longer by as much as 4 to 5 minutes per day. This increase slows down after May until it stops altogether on June 21. Then the reverse occurs and the days get shorter again.

So, if the days get shorter they have to get longer somewhere else, right?
Absolutely, they get longer on the Southern half of the planet. That's where you will find countries such as Australia, Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and many others. When it is Summer in Northern America, Europe and most of Asia, it is winter in those countries.

All of this explanation happens in the animation above. When more of the top (Northern) half of the planet is dark than light we say it is Winter. And the opposite is true for the bottom (Southern) half where it is Summer. Watch now and see how the darkness changes to light. Summer!! Time to go to the pool.

Have Fun, kids!!
