A Bit of History
Video games were first developed in the early 1970's.  The first commercially successful arcade video game, called Pong, appeared in 1972.  In the late 1970's and early 1980's, the video game industry entered a period of rapid growth with such popular games as Space Invaders and Pac-Man.  The successful Donkey Kong was introduced in 1981.  Super Mario Bros. and later versions became some of the most popular video games before the beginning of the CD-ROM era in the late 1980's.(*2)
In the late 1970's came the advent of computer games, sort of a home based arcade.  The Apple II, BBC, Commodore 64, and TRS 80 were among some of the most popular computers used.  As computer technology grew from 64K memory to today's multi-Gigabit memory and the advancement of DVD's, in 1996, games can now be played in 3D on computers and on the Internet.
As network technology advanced so did the ability of Games being played over the networks.  The Internet began it's ability to run interactive applications in 1995 using simple Java, known as Java Applets, and Java Script games. Today some of the most popular 3D Games are played over the Internet through Game Servers.
