| A Bit of History Important changes took place within the U.S. economy. Several major industries of the early 1900's lost importance. For example, mining, steel production, and automobile manufacturing played much smaller roles in the nation's economy. In agriculture, the family farm, sharecropping, and tenant farming lost importance. These older systems were replaced by large, mechanized farms that could supply much of the world with food and other products. Service industries, those that provided services rather than agricultural products or manufactured goods, took on a larger role in the economy. A painful adjustment followed the displacement of old forms of employment. Many people who lost their jobs in mining and manufacturing found it difficult to find new ones. The growth of service and high technology industries, however, resulted in an increase in the total number of wage earners throughout this period.(*1) Currently the economy, company strategies and ways of employing are still ever changing. What once was a steady secure job has now made it's way from long term job security to short term and unstable jobs. People are having to find other means to supplement their main income even with a two income earner family. While others are having to find other means to make a living than what they were originally educated and trained for. 50 years ago the average person changed careers once. Twenty years ago it increased to four. Today the number of times one person changes careers is 7. Many are forced to become self-employed due to their skills being over qualified for positions companies are looking to fill, which companies have made a concerted effort to show shareholders more profit by lowering the skill level of a position to keep the payroll down as one of their strategies. The technological advancement of the Internet has not only altered the way companies view their marketing techniques to promote sales and their way of employing individuals, but also individuals have had to change their way of thinking for securing an income incase their "job" takes a turn for the worse, through no fault of their own. People are turning to consulting and information oriented forms of making money. Large corporations have made the competition in manufacturing of products so fierce that the small business and individuals have little to no chance of surviving unless the product they are selling is unique. A money making wave on the Internet, and through mail order, is the Work At Home Opportunities. eBooks are another one of the fastest growing Work At Home opportunities on the Internet to make money, they're inexpensive and easy to sell. Although eBooks are still in the early stages of popularity, it follows the tradition of the published novel, self-help, fiction, and other types of books, some good and some bad, the same as published books. The difference eBooks have over published books is that eBooks do not have to go through a publisher first to get published on the Internet. Thereby making it possible for an individual to have their book published without the scrutiny of others. Of course this allows the field of publishing to be wide open for a lot of poorly written books, political books and good books that otherwise would be snubbed for unjustified reasons. There are controversial fears that these eBooks will take money away from the publishers, like the fear the telephone companies had when the World Wide Web was born. Although many believe in these fears, it is the big companies that have the fears not the small businesses. For big businesses it means a smaller profit margin but not a loss of their business. It is the big corporations that want to make the big bucks. Most small businesses only want to make a decent living for themselves, their family and their employees. If these fears for these opportunities are allowed to propagate on a large scale to destroy free enterprise, than an individual or small business will find it hard to come up with any unique inventions and innovations to make a living and therefore free enterprise dies. Instead monopolized industries will reign and control (i.e., the cable company in your area, the electric company, the US Post Office, Windows, the telephone company in your area, and the water and sewage company). If small businesses are not supported then soon you will see the monopoly as big companies like Verizon/GTE/Air Touch/Adelphia - Wallmart/Sam's - Microsoft/Great Plains/MSN/MSN NBC - Earthlink/Sprint/Mindspring/Netcom - AOL/ICQ/Time Warner/Warner Brothers - Disneyland/ABC - News Syndications/CNN/ABC News/NBC News/CBS News/BBS News, etc. What happens when there are monopolies?
