File  Comp. Sci.  A collection of related data or program records.

File Size: The size that the data or record or image is when it is created.

When the file is sent through the Internet, either via email or other form of file transfer protocol, the data of the file is broken into particles (layman terms) and these particles are sent through the wires/cables and then reformed at the receiving end.

The bigger the file size the longer it takes to transfer.  If you are on a slow connection, like 28.8K or 56K modem, or you are on a very busy cable or DSL line then it transfer even slower.
